REGULATORY AGENCIES
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is the commonwealth marine safety investigator. It is a multi modal statutory commonwealth agency. ATSB works with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the maritime regulator, to provide the system of safety for the maritime industry. Some state agencies also may work with ATSB, as agreed, to gain the best industry response.
The ATSB is an independent, no-blame, systemic safety investigator and works using the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003 to provide this educational service. It also recognises the Casualty Investigation Code (IMO MSC resolution A255(84)) to work in cooperation with international flag States as required.
