CARGO SHIPPING
88% of Australia's seaborne trade tonnage comes from export cargo commodities. Australian solid mineral exports amount to approximately $234 billion, which is around 60% of all export merchandise. Australia's main mineral exports include iron ore (41.1%), black coal (27.4%), gold, copper, bauxite-alumina-aluminium, nickel and zinc.
Australia is the largest exporter of LNG in the world, averaging over $40 billion annually. Australia has substantial conventional gas resources, the largest of which are located offshore. In 2021 Australia’s LNG exports reached a record high of 81.2 million tonnes (approximately 6,000 Pj in 2019-20), making Australia the world’s largest LNG exporter. Primarily, Australia exports LNG to Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan and India. LNG is exclusively transported by sea.
Australia handles over 8 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of container volume annually amongst our five largest container ports (Melbourne, Botany, Brisbane, Adelaide and Fremantle). Melbourne is Australia’s busiest container port, handling 2.96 million TEUs in 2019, ahead of Botany at 2.57 million TEUs.
Our membership has substantial experience in the seaborne and shoreside production chains of solid minerals and LNG. This expertise projects from marine personnel, terminal operators, extraction personnel and expert consultants.
